How Best to Support Alzheimer's October 27, 2014

November is Alzheimer's Support month. Folks in many communities, mostly the caregivers for Alzheimer's and other dementia sufferers march to raise money for research for a cure. Please join us and donate money to support the cause. The best hope for a cure is financial support for the academic and private research facilities.

Here in Arizona, the weather is perfect for walking or for whatever folks want to do outside. It is butterfly season in my backyard with delicate white butterflies and bold yellow ones fliting among the bright bougainvilla.  Many small flowers dot the low bushes with lilac and yellow blooms lifting the spirits and brightening the day. One of my friends who is a caregiver for an ailing spouse joined me for a walk and revealed that she is feeling so trapped by her infrequent periods of respite from caring.

Let's use this upcoming November to support a caregiver. Visit, phone, offer to sit with a relative or a friend to permit a bit of respite for the continuous presence required of people who are now lacking not only in self-care skills but who rely on their spouses or adult live-in children for their identity.
